How to Balance Control and Trust in Your Mobile Communication Strategy

Mobile communication is becoming an increasingly important part of a company’s internal communication strategy. This type of communication is beneficial not only to employee engagement but overall productivity of the company. To gain these benefits one must understand the unique set of challenges, mobile communication brings with it. Companies must first work to find the right balance of control with their mobile communication systems, as well as instill trust in their employees.

It’s natural for management to want to control mobile communication among employees. As noted on CIO.com, the more employees and contractors are allowed to use mobile devices to access company systems and data, the more crucial it is to protect and control that access. Companies already know how important it is to have the highest quality security measures in place. Things like firewalls, spam filters, and other security protocols have brought forward the highest quality of security, but many are now worried that mobile devices are allowing employees to work outside those barriers. That’s why companies should offer similar security protocols for mobile devices, whether those devices are provided by the company or part of a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy, as well as ensuring any mobile apps they use are as secure as possible. However, there’s a fine line between providing adequate security and demanding too much, keeping employees from being able to use the mobile communication technology effectively.

Trust

While it is only prudent to have security measures in place, employees don’t want to feel like it’s a struggle to use their mobile devices. Asking employees to use complex passwords, keep their devices up-to-date with the latest update, and using security software are a few ways you can empower employees to take part in controlling their devices without impeding their productivity. Allowing employees to feel part of the process is important. They need to feel trusted to be able to use their devices correctly. Employees don’t need to be treated like children, according to Lucy Adams, former director of HR for BBC. Instead there should be a “relationship based on mutual trust between adults rather than the current parent/child dynamic.” Bringing your employees into the process is one way of avoiding that dynamic. Remember, mobile devices should be boosting productivity and saving your company money, but to do so they must be used correctly and securely. Otherwise, they present a real danger and financial risk. That’s why it is essential to balance control and trust.
